SAKARÉ by Jenny: A Journey Through Cultures!

"A blend of Andaman, Kanyakumari, with a dash of France curated on a plate."

Simplifying SAKARÉ in one statement is no easy feat. However, because of the friendship Jenny and I share, I was privileged to get a sneak peek into her journey. SAKARÉ might have started in Bangalore, but I was introduced to it in a quaint little neighborhood in Chennai. A multitude of cultures has inspired Jenny and her passion for baking.

Back in 2016, I met this quirky and charming junior from law school. We quickly realized we shared a common heritage in Kanyakumari, but nothing else seemed to align. Yet, over time, our shared interest in the culinary arts—an essential distraction from the rigors of law—and a few secrets I dare not reveal, fostered a deep mutual respect and friendship between us. From the humble shores of Andaman to the bustling streets of Bangalore, SAKARÉ’s journey has been anything but ordinary.

Set in a brick house nestled in a serene green neighborhood in Bangalore, SAKARÉ is run by an exceptional team of three: Jenny; her junior from culinary school, Savali; and her sister, Steffi. They source ingredients for their menu from the places they’ve lived, creating a culinary experience steeped in memory and flavor. It’s a destination easy to find on maps—if you have a love for good food.

Jenny has always been an inspiration. She’s pursued her passion for baking with unwavering determination, despite the challenges and detours along the way—including what she considers “wasting” five years of her life in law school. (I remind her of this every time she asks me for legal advice.)

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Jenny moved back to Andaman after “in-completing” law school and began baking under the banner Twisty Tales. Her creations took the islands by storm—quite literally, considering Andaman’s monsoon-ravaged geography. For locals, cozy, home-baked treats were a novel delight. Jenny’s work was featured in multiple articles and social media pages. I saw my friend flourish, even as our calls became rare due to her growing commitments. Yet, she still managed to bring me some delectable goodies when she returned for her supposed graduation (thanks, COVID).

It was during that visit, as she prepared to “graduate,” that she dropped a bombshell: she was moving to Bangalore for a culinary course. I was momentarily stunned, but I understood her passion and desire to make her dreams a reality. Her time in Bangalore saw her intern at Hilton and eventually secure a position at a Michelin-starred restaurant in France. Before she left for France, I met her during a brief visit. That was the pivotal moment before she transformed into the incredible pastry chef who would later create SAKARÉ.

SAKARÉ, located in OMBR Layout, Banaswadi, Bengaluru, offers a seven-course dessert menu—a unique gastronomic journey. It begins with a Tapioca Tartelette inspired by her roots in Kanyakumari and concludes with comforting hot cocoa and a Cheese plate. The experience is both subtle and extraordinary, every course a testament to careful craftsmanship and creativity. I would delve into the menu’s details, but it changes every month, ensuring every visit feels like the first. The care and dedication Jenny, Savali, and Steffi bring to their work are unmatched.

SAKARÉ is not just a restaurant; it’s a story of passion, perseverance, and the perfect blend of flavors and memories. Jenny’s journey reminds us that sometimes, to find your true calling, you must venture off the beaten path.
